An Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with cross-border spread reported in Uganda's capital, Kampala.
The DRC has recorded 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths, making this outbreak potentially the 10th largest Ebola outbreak to date.
Preliminary tests indicate this is not caused by the common Zaire strain; further sequencing is ongoing, with the Bundibugyo strain suspected in Uganda.
The strain difference complicates responses as current licensed vaccines and treatments target the Zaire strain.
