- The study compared two surgical approaches for children with Chiari type I malformation and syringomyelia: decompression with duraplasty (PFD-D) versus decompression alone (PFD).
- No significant difference in surgical complication rates within 6 months was found between the two groups (14% with PFD-D vs. 6% with PFD).
- At 24 months, PFD-D demonstrated higher rates of clinical improvement (58% vs. 46%) and syrinx reduction (3.08 mm vs. 1.22 mm) but required fewer repeat decompressions (3% vs. 14%).
- Health-related quality of life changes were similar in both treatment groups.
- The findings suggest that larger clinical trials are needed to accurately evaluate the relative benefits and risks between duraplasty and decompression alone for this condition.
