- Post-tuberculosis lung disease is a known sequela of pulmonary tuberculosis, but pulmonary sequelae in treated extra-pulmonary tuberculosis were previously unknown.
- A study conducted in India enrolled 775 tuberculosis survivors, including 275 treated for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, and 502 non-tuberculosis controls.
- At treatment completion, extra-pulmonary tuberculosis survivors showed lower lung function z-scores for FEV1 and FVC and higher odds of restrictive spirometry compared to controls.
- Lung function deficits persisted over 1.5 years of follow-up and were associated with respiratory symptoms.
- Ventilatory defects in treated extra-pulmonary tuberculosis were phenotypically similar to those in pulmonary tuberculosis but with lower burden, severity, and symptom likelihood.
- The study concludes that individuals treated for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis should be screened for post-tuberculosis lung disease.
