- Lippmann emulsion making is similar to standard silver gelatin emulsion with steps: halide precipitation, noodling & washing, and adding finals.
- Precipitation involves precise temperature control (35C) and adding potassium bromide/potassium iodide to gelatin, then silver nitrate under dark conditions.
- After washing, finals like erythrosine (green sensitivity) and pinacyanol (red sensitivity) are added at 35C, then emulsion is coated immediately on leveled plates.
- Exposure is long (minutes to hours), with optional hypersensitizing using TEA to increase speed, and plates are developed in a pyro-ammonium carbonate developer.
- Development time affects color brightness and purity; post-processing includes swelling with glycerin to correct color shifts and mounting with a prism for protection and enhanced viewing.
