- Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a tauopathy associated with repetitive head impacts, but factors influencing regional brain susceptibility to tau deposition are unclear.
- Using data from former professional American football players and controls, researchers found that cortical regions with lower typical gray matter myelin water fraction (MWF) showed higher tau-PET uptake.
- White matter tracts with lower typical MWF were linked to higher tau-PET covariance, while higher functional connectivity (FC) was associated with higher tau-PET covariance.
- The study suggests that in individuals at risk for CTE, regional susceptibility to tau deposition may be driven by low myelin and high functional connectivity.
