  • Doxycycline showed no significant difference in efficacy compared to standard treatments for Staphylococcus prosthetic joint infections (PJI).
  • The study was a multicenter case-control design with 67 patients (23 doxycycline, 44 controls), and the primary endpoint of death or treatment failure at 2 years was similar in both groups (43%).
  • Adverse events were higher in the doxycycline group (35% vs. 20%), but premature discontinuation was rare and comparable between groups.
  • Doxycycline was not associated with an increased risk of unfavourable outcomes in statistical models, suggesting it may be a pragmatic alternative when first-line options are not feasible.
  • Limitations include the observational design and small sample size, so findings should be considered exploratory.
