- The US Department of Justice is dropping fraud charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after he hired a legal team led by Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Robert J Giuffra Jr.
- In an April meeting, Giuffra reportedly offered that Adani would invest $10 billion in the US economy and create 15,000 jobs if charges were dropped, and presented arguments on lack of evidence and jurisdiction.
- Adani was accused of conspiring to pay $250 million in bribes to Indian officials, misleading investors, and obstructing justice, with indictments filed in New York in November 2024.
- Adani, founder of the Adani Group, is Asia's richest man with close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, facing allegations of crony capitalism and monopolistic practices in India.
- Giuffra, co-chair of Sullivan & Cromwell, also represents Donald Trump in legal appeals, and the Justice Department has not commented on the reports of the dropped charges.
