- Pulsed field ablation (PFA) caused less autonomic modulation but had better arrhythmia-free outcomes at 12 months compared to cryoballoon ablation (CBA).
- PFA was associated with higher heart rate variability (HRV) and lower daytime and nighttime heart rates than CBA throughout the 12-month follow-up.
- HRV levels did not differ between PFA patients with and without arrhythmia recurrence, but a stronger initial HRV suppression predicted better outcomes in CBA patients.
- The study suggests that modulation of the cardiac autonomic nervous system may not be essential for successful ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
