  • A study compared a novel bilateral sequential accelerated theta-burst stimulation (BS-aTBS) protocol to a standard intermittent TBS (a-iTBS) protocol in 94 patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
  • BS-aTBS showed significantly greater reductions in depression scores on the HDRS-24 at week 1 and week 5, with higher response rates and additional benefits for anxiety and suicidal ideation at week 5.
  • Both protocols significantly improved depression symptoms, with BS-aTBS also leading to better improvements in sleep quality and cognitive abilities, while effects on anhedonia and alexithymia were similar between groups.
  • The BS-aTBS protocol was well-tolerated with no serious adverse events, offering rapid antidepressant effects lasting up to one month and is considered a promising, efficient treatment option for TRD.
