- Lyme borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere.
- Caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species transmitted via Ixodes ricinus complex ticks.
- Earliest manifestation is erythema migrans skin lesion, appearing 7-14 days after a tick bite.
- Untreated cases may progress to conditions like borrelial lymphocytoma, nervous system involvement, carditis, Lyme arthritis, or acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans.
- Diagnosis of erythema migrans is clinical; other manifestations rely on serological testing.
- Treatment with antibiotics resolves symptoms for most, though some experience prolonged subjective symptoms.
- Repeated antibiotic courses are not beneficial except in rare cases of objective treatment failure.
