- Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) in children is rare but life-threatening, requiring timely diagnosis and treatment to reduce mortality.
- Lack of standardized guidelines for PTE management in children prompted this expert consensus to provide evidence-based recommendations.
- The expert panel included 30 members from various clinical areas, following WHO Handbook for Guideline Development.
- Systematic reviews and GRADE approach were used to evaluate evidence quality and formulate recommendations.
- 33 recommendations were developed, covering diagnosis, treatment (anticoagulant, thrombolysis, catheter-based therapy, surgery), multidisciplinary care, comorbidities, prognosis, education, and follow-up.
- 18 weak recommendations were based on very low-quality evidence, and 15 were good practice statements.
- The consensus highlights the need for further research on early identification, treatment strategies, and long-term management of PTE in children.
