- Study evaluates the association between type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and incident dementia using data from the All of Us (AoU) cohort.
- Participants were classified as having no DM, T1DM, or type 2 DM (T2DM) based on electronic health records (EHRs).
- An algorithm was developed and validated to distinguish DM types, using self-reported diabetes type and C-peptide values as reference measures.
- Results showed that participants with T1DM had a higher incidence of dementia compared to those without DM (HR 2.82; 95% CI 2.28-3.48).
- Participants with T2DM also had an elevated risk of dementia (HR 2.08; 95% CI 2.87-2.31).
- Findings were consistent across different demographic groups, including sex, race, and ethnicity.
- The study highlights the need for further research into the mechanisms linking T1DM to dementia.
