  • The study aimed to assess the effects of didgeridoo playing on daytime sleepiness and other sleep-related outcomes in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and snoring.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to either a didgeridoo training group (14 patients) or a control group on a waiting list (11 patients). The intervention involved didgeridoo lessons and daily practice at home for four months.
  • Primary outcome measured was daytime sleepiness using the Epworth scale. Secondary outcomes included apnoea-hypopnoea index, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, partner-reported sleep disturbance, and health-related quality of life (SF-36).
  • Results showed significant improvements in the didgeridoo group compared to controls: daytime sleepiness decreased (difference -3.0, P=0.03), apnoea-hypopnoea index reduced (difference -6.2, P=0.05), and partners reported less sleep disturbance (difference -2.8, P<0.01). Sleep quality did not significantly improve.
  • The combined analysis of sleep-related outcomes indicated a moderate to large effect of didgeridoo playing (difference -0.78 SD units, P<0.01). Health-related quality of life did not differ between groups.
  • The study concluded that regular didgeridoo playing is an effective and well-accepted treatment alternative for patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and snoring.
  • Strengths included a long intervention duration and blinded outcome assessment, while limitations were the lack of a sham control and small sample size.
  • Future larger trials are needed to confirm the findings, but didgeridoo playing offers hope for improving symptoms and partner sleep disturbance in moderate cases.
