The author reflects on 2025, a politically challenging year, but chose not to let external factors waste their time.
Inspired by thru-hikers and childhood fascinations, the author embarked on a project to create a balsa model of the Orion space clipper from '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
Using a modest CO2 laser cutter, the author overcame limitations in cutting area and power to precisely cut thin balsa sheets for the model.
The spacecraft from '2001: A Space Odyssey' holds a special place for the author due to its design, resembling actual NASA proposals.
The author targeted a 44" length for the balsa model, based on community estimates of the original filming model's size.
Affinity Designer was used to create the laser cutting paths, avoiding Adobe's subscription model.
The model was constructed using balsa ribs and stringers, with iterative improvements based on critical evaluation.
The model was covered with Monokote™, painted, and finished with custom decals, including the Pan-Am logo.
The author enjoys the technical and sculptural aspects of model making, comparing it to engineering or architectural work.
Plans to share the project files, either cleaned up or as-is, to allow others to build the model themselves.
