- Mounting evidence suggests that renin-independent aldosteronism is common and often underrecognized.
- The study aimed to determine whether aldosterone measures are associated with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in community-dwelling older adults.
- Participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study with serum aldosterone and renin levels measured in 2011 to 2013 were included.
- Higher aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR) was associated with a composite outcome of CVD events, stroke, and atrial fibrillation (AF), but not with heart failure hospitalization or myocardial infarction (MI).
- The findings highlight the aldosterone pathway as a potential target for CVD prevention, especially in older adults.
