- Infants under 6 months with Kawasaki disease were studied to see if intensified initial therapy reduced persistent coronary artery damage.
- 46.5% of patients had coronary artery aneurysms on initial echocardiogram after IVIG, with 79% receiving intensified therapy, mostly infliximab.
- Among those receiving intensified therapy, 10 developed medium or giant aneurysms, but 6 fully remodeled by the study's end.
- At one-year follow-up, only 5 patients (7%) had residual coronary artery aneurysms, all mild, with none severe (Z-score > +3).
- The study suggests that intensified treatment may help prevent severe coronary artery damage, but larger trials are needed for confirmation.
