  • Celiac disease (CeD) involves an immune response to gluten, causing small intestinal inflammation and injury, with symptoms managed only by a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD).
  • CeD patients show impaired microbial fiber metabolism in the small intestine, linked to depletion of fiber-degrading bacteria like Prevotella spp., regardless of GFD treatment.
  • In germ-free mice, colonization with Prevotella spp. increased small intestinal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
  • In gluten-sensitized mice with HLA-DQ8, an inulin-supplemented diet enhanced microbial saccharolytic function and SCFA production, accelerating mucosal healing during the GFD.
  • The findings support exploring dietary fiber supplementation and microbial fiber degradation to improve GFD responses in CeD.
