- Procrastinated on finding a backup solution for Fujifilm RAW files, previously manually copying across two external SSDs.
- Decided to purchase hard drives and set up a homelab due to rising hard drive prices from AI data center buildouts.
- Repurposed an old gaming PC (2018 build) with AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, GTX 1070 Ti, and 16GB RAM for storage and backup needs.
- Installed TrueNAS Community Edition on NVMe for network-attached storage (NAS), featuring snapshots for data recovery.
- Configured RAID 1 with two 8TB WD Red Plus drives for data redundancy and used SSD for fast read/write services.
- Self-hosted apps on TrueNAS: Scrutiny (drive health monitoring), Backrest (restic backups to Backblaze B2), Immich (photo/video backup), Mealie (recipe management), and Ollama (AI models).
- Used Tailscale for secure remote access to homelab without exposing it to the public internet.
- Future plan: Assign custom domain names to services to simplify access and password management.
