Spirit Airlines, America's eighth-largest carrier, has permanently ceased operations due to financial troubles, stranding thousands of passengers and canceling all flights.
The airline, a pioneer in ultra-low-cost travel, entered its second bankruptcy and couldn't secure a government bailout after creditors rejected a rescue plan.
About 17,000 workers, including employees and contractors, have lost their jobs, and the shutdown may lead to higher fares across the U.S. airline industry.
Passengers with Spirit tickets are being issued refunds for credit/debit card purchases but must rebook on other airlines themselves; those using vouchers or points may not get refunds.
Spirit had been unprofitable since the pandemic, and rising jet fuel prices due to the Iran war exacerbated its financial struggles, despite efforts to restructure debt.
The closure eliminates 2% of domestic U.S. flights, potentially increasing industry fares, and marks the first major U.S. airline shutdown since Midway Airlines in 2001.
