Exhibition of Miroslav Tichý's photographs at Michael Hoppen Gallery from 28th April – 29th May 2010.
Tichý's work is described as marginal, disturbing, poetic, beautiful, creepy, voyeuristic, and misogynist.
Tichý used homemade cameras made from tin cans, children’s spectacle lenses, rubber bands, and other found materials.
His photographs focus on women in his hometown of Kyjov, capturing everyday moments with a unique, hallucinatory quality.
Tichý was a dissident during the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia and spent time in prison and psychiatric wards.
His work gained recognition in 2005 when he won the 'New Discovery Award' at Arles.
Tichý's photographs have been exhibited in major museums worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern.
His techniques involved deliberate processing mistakes to add poetic imperfections to his images.
Tichý's work is noted for its ability to transform banal moments into something mysterious and exceptional.
He passed away on April 12, 2011, in Kyjov, Czech Republic.
