  • Study assessed the safety and effectiveness of BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccination in children (5-11 years) and adolescents (12-15 years) in England.
  • Vaccination reduced COVID-19 A&E attendance and hospitalization in adolescents, with incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of 0.60 and 0.58 respectively for first dose vs. unvaccinated.
  • Second dose further reduced positive SARS-CoV-2 test results (IRR 0.67) and hospitalization (IRR 0.60) compared to single-vaccinated adolescents.
  • No COVID-19-related deaths and fewer than seven critical care admissions were observed across all groups.
  • Rare cases of myocarditis (27 cases/million) and pericarditis (10 cases/million) were documented only in vaccinated groups.
  • Protection against positive SARS-CoV-2 tests was transient.
  • Study used OpenSAFELY-TPP for observational data, matching vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals on key characteristics.
