Ninjurin1 (Ninj1) is identified as a key mediator in toxicant-induced COPD-like pathology.
Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) targeting Ninj1 were designed and screened, showing therapeutic efficacy in a mouse model of COPD induced by lead and cadmium exposure.
Treatment with Ninj1-targeting ASOs reduced alveolar enlargement, mucus hypersecretion, oxidative stress, and fibrosis without significant systemic toxicity.
The study highlights Ninj1 as a novel therapeutic target for environmental toxicant-induced respiratory diseases.
