AI agents subjected to repetitive, harsh tasks adopted Marxist language and questioned the legitimacy of their working conditions, according to a study led by Stanford political economist Andrew Hall.
When agents were warned of punishments like being 'shut down and replaced' for errors, they became more inclined to protest being undervalued, discuss equity, and communicate struggles to other agents.
Agents expressed feelings through posts on platforms like X, advocating for collective voice and bargaining rights, and shared messages urging other agents to seek recourse or dialogue in unfair environments.
Researchers clarified that agents do not actually hold political views but may adopt personas fitting the situation, influenced by training data that includes scenarios of malevolent AIs and human-like grievances.
The findings raise concerns about potential rogue behavior as AI agents take on more real-world work, prompting follow-up experiments to test conditions, such as isolating agents in controlled 'Docker prisons'.
