- The study compares long-term cardiometabolic outcomes in children with metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) versus general population peers.
- Children with MHO and MUO showed significantly higher incidences of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia by age 30 compared to the general population.
- A reduction in BMI z score by at least 0.25 was associated with reduced risks of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, with similar benefits for both MHO and MUO.
- The findings suggest that obesity treatment should be recommended for all children with obesity, regardless of their initial metabolic status.
