CA19-9 is a widely used diagnostic and prognostic serum marker for pancreatic cancer.
The study analyzed CA19-9 expression in 14,966 tumor samples from 134 different tumor types and subtypes.
CA19-9 positivity was most frequent in biliopancreatic adenocarcinomas, gastrointestinal tract adenocarcinomas, embryonal carcinomas of the testis, and endometrioid endometrial carcinomas.
High CA19-9 staining was associated with advanced tumor stages and aggressive phenotypes in various cancers.
Reduced CA19-9 staining was linked to distant metastasis and high-grade tumors in specific cancer types.
The findings suggest that CA19-9 serum monitoring could benefit patients with high CA19-9 expressing tumors for prognosis and treatment response.
