  • Study examines link between incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer risk using data from two large European cohorts (EPIC and UK Biobank) totaling 568,926 adults free of CVD, cancer, and type 2 diabetes at baseline.
  • Over a median follow-up of 10.9 years, 51,559 participants developed cancer, with 2,344 having a prior CVD diagnosis. CVD was associated with higher cancer risk within the first year post-diagnosis (HR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.46-1.86), but not significantly thereafter.
  • Sex-specific analysis shows increased cancer risk 1-5 years post-CVD diagnosis in women (HR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.06-1.21), while no such association was observed in men beyond the first year.
  • Findings suggest potential overdiagnosis bias, especially in men within the first year, while women show sustained elevated risk up to 5 years post-CVD diagnosis.
  • Limitations include lack of data on CVD medication use, which could affect interpretation of results.
