- Short-form videos (SFVs) have gained global popularity, but their impact on mental health remains inconsistent.
- This study conducted a meta-analysis of 58 studies with 96,676 participants to examine the relationship between SFV use and mental health.
- Results showed no significant correlation between SFV use and positive psychological states.
- Significant positive correlations were found between SFV use and negative psychological states, including depression, anxiety, stress, negative affect, loneliness, and boredom.
- Problematic SFV use showed significant negative associations with subjective well-being and positive correlations with adverse mental health outcomes.
- Routine SFV use showed no significant associations with negative affect and a nonsignificant negative correlation with anxiety.
- The study highlights the importance of differentiating between problematic and routine SFV use patterns.
- Future research should use objective measurement instruments, include greater geographical diversity, and employ longitudinal or experimental designs to establish causality.
