X (formerly Twitter) is shutting down its Communities feature due to low usage and high spam.
Less than 0.4% of users used Communities, but they contributed to 80% of spam reports, scams, and malware.
Many successful Communities became channels for driving paid traffic to external platforms like Kick.
The feature was described as a "Temu version of subreddits" compared to Reddit.
Communities will be shut down on May 6, 2026, with migration to revamped group chats extended to May 30.
XChat will introduce joinable links for group chats, supporting up to 500 members, aiming for 1,000.
X is shifting focus to Custom Timelines for Premium users and expanding group chats instead.
The company is accelerating product releases, launching 2-3 new features weekly, including payments and XChat plans.
