Affected models include early Kindle e-readers like the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire tablets, with up to 2 million devices potentially rendered obsolete.
Users can still read already downloaded e-books, but a factory reset on these devices will make them unusable.
Some users have expressed frustration, calling the move unnecessary as Kindles are low-tech text devices that don't require frequent updates.
Amazon states these devices have been supported for 14-18 years and offers discounts for newer models, citing technological advancements and security reasons.
Concerns have been raised about e-waste, with estimates suggesting over 624 tons could be generated, and older devices turning into limited offline tools.
