- Study examines the link between intrinsic capacity (IC) and stroke risk in middle-aged and older Chinese adults.
- IC is a WHO concept reflecting functional ability across cognition, psychological well-being, mobility, vitality, and sensory function.
- Data from 10,751 participants in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were analyzed.
- Higher IC levels were associated with significantly lower stroke incidence over a 7-year follow-up.
- Each one-point increase in IC was linked to a 35.1% reduction in stroke risk.
- The highest IC quartile had an 89.6% lower stroke risk compared to the lowest quartile.
- Subgroup analyses showed stronger protective associations in women, older adults, urban residents, and non-smokers or non-drinkers.
- Findings support IC as a holistic, function-based indicator for early stroke prevention strategies.
