- Hypertension significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes (T2D).
- A healthy lifestyle, including a high-quality diet, no smoking, physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption, and a healthy BMI, was assessed.
- Higher healthy lifestyle scores (HLS) were associated with lower risks of CVDs (AHR 0.49) and T2D (AHR 0.21).
- Improving HLS after hypertension diagnosis reduced risks of CVDs (AHR 0.88) and T2D (AHR 0.56).
- Declining HLS after diagnosis increased risks of CVDs (AHR 1.14) and T2D (AHR 1.75).
- Healthy lifestyle benefits were independent of antihypertensive medication use.
