Auto mode is a new permissions mode in Claude Code that allows Claude to make permission decisions on your behalf with safeguards.
It provides a safer alternative to --dangerously-skip-permissions by reviewing actions before execution and blocking risky ones.
Auto mode reduces interruptions for long-running tasks while maintaining safety through a classifier that checks for destructive actions.
Risky actions are blocked, and if Claude insists on them, a permission prompt is triggered.
Auto mode is available as a research preview for Team plan users and will roll out to Enterprise and API users soon.
It works with Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 and may slightly impact token consumption, cost, and latency.
