Pseudorabies virus (PRV), traditionally a veterinary pathogen, has emerged as a zoonotic agent causing severe human infections.
Since 2017, novel PRV variants in China have breached species barriers, resulting in 31 confirmed human cases of encephalitis and endophthalmitis with high mortality and disability rates by 2023.
The article calls for a coordinated One Health response to address this emerging public health threat.
Eradication of PRV in domestic pigs through enhanced vaccination, biosecurity, and policy support is deemed feasible and essential.
