- High body mass index (BMI) significantly increases the global burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including ischemic heart disease (IHD), hypertensive heart disease (HHD), ischemic stroke (IS), and intracranial hemorrhage.
- From 1990 to 2023, deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to high BMI-related CVDs more than doubled, with males more affected by IHD and females slightly more affected by HHD, IS, and intracranial hemorrhage.
- The age group with the highest deaths was over 70 years, while DALYs peaked in the 50-69 age group.
- The fastest-growing annual percentage change (APC) in deaths and DALYs was observed in low socio-demographic index (SDI) countries and lower-middle income regions.
- Addressing high BMI and associated cardiovascular risks is crucial, especially in vulnerable populations, to mitigate the growing impact of obesity-related CVDs.
