- Nearly half (47%) of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients received potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) medications.
- Common PIP medications included neuroleptics (29%), systemic steroids (10%), and NSAIDs (6%).
- Independent predictors of PIP included rheumatoid arthritis, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and gout.
- Patients on PIP were less likely to receive guideline-directed medical therapies (GDMT).
- PIP was associated with increased risks of HF death, all-cause and cardiovascular death, and HF hospitalizations.
- The study highlights the need for strategies to reduce inappropriate prescribing in HFrEF patients.
