- Overlap syndrome (COPD plus OSA) patients on home NIV have a 33% lower mortality rate compared to COPD-only patients.
- Transition probabilities from severe exacerbation to death and from non-exacerbation to death were lower in overlap syndrome (10% and 5%) than in COPD without OSA (22% and 18%).
- Overlap syndrome patients also showed a higher rate of recovery from severe exacerbation to non-exacerbation after NIV initiation.
- The study highlights the importance of screening for OSA in COPD patients, as those with overlap syndrome benefit more from long-term home NIV therapy.
