- The DASH diet and sodium reduction lower absolute blood pressure (BP) levels and cardiovascular risk, but their effects on BP variability (BPV) were uncertain.
- Pooled analysis from DASH and DASH-Sodium trials showed no significant difference in week-to-week systolic BPV or 24-hour ambulatory systolic BPV between DASH and control diet groups.
- In the DASH-Sodium trial, there was no difference in BPV between higher and lower sodium intake levels, and no interactive effects between diet and sodium on BPV were observed.
- The benefits of the DASH diet and sodium reduction on cardiovascular outcomes likely result from lowering absolute BP rather than reducing BPV.
