- Study aims to test the association between renal dysfunction biomarkers and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) risk using UK Biobank data.
- Two cohorts were analyzed: a whole cohort of 43,314 adults and a sub-cohort of 9,786 adults randomly selected from the whole cohort.
- Renal dysfunction was associated with increased white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume, mean diffusivity (MD), and decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the whole cohort.
- In the sub-cohort, renal dysfunction was linked to increased risk of lacunes, WMHs, enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS), cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), and greater CSVD burden.
- Findings suggest that multidimensional renal dysfunction biomarkers are independently associated with CSVD risk in adults.
