- Azure Linux 4.0 is now publicly available as a general-purpose Linux distribution for any Azure VM, moving beyond its previous role as a specialized OS for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- It is derived from Fedora 43, using declarative overlays to document changes from upstream, and features kernel 6.18 LTS, dnf5 package manager, updated components like glibc 2.42 and Python 3.14, and enhanced security with SELinux and FIPS 140-3 certification in progress.
- This release marks Microsoft's evolution from consuming Linux to shipping a distributable Linux, emphasizing auditable supply chains, minimal design for cloud workloads, and support across Azure compute surfaces including VMs, containers, AKS, and WSL.
