'Dream OLED' with blue PHOLED ready for mass production, says LG Display

LG Display is the first company to verify a 'dream OLED' with blue PHOLED for mass production.
Blue PHOLED has been a major technical challenge for over 20 years, unlike red and green OLED pixels which are already phosphorescent.
Phosphorescent OLED offers 100% luminous efficiency and uses a quarter of the power compared to fluorescent OLED.
LG Display has partnered with Universal Display Corp (UDC) for blue PHOLED material, collaborating for eight months.
The first blue PHOLED panels will be showcased at SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, California, starting May 11.
Initial panels are small and medium-sized for smartphones and tablets, with potential expansion to other display types.
The panels use a hybrid two-stack tandem structure, reducing power consumption by about 15% while maintaining stability.
LG Display supplies OLED panels to major brands like Apple, LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, and Philips.
Blue PHOLED commercialization will improve OLED display picture quality and energy efficiency, though initial costs may be higher.
