  • A novel multi-epitope vaccine targets Helicobacter pylori, aiming to prevent chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer.
  • The vaccine combines 16 B- and T-cell epitopes from six virulence factors into a Multi-Epitope Unit (MEU) antigen.
  • Two formulations were tested: a flagellin-adjuvanted protein and a recombinant Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) viral vector.
  • Both formulations induced strong MEU-specific antibody and CD4+ T-cell responses in mice, with the best results from MEU-flagellin priming plus MVA-MEU.
  • The vaccines promoted balanced Th1/Th2 immunity and increased CD4+NKT-like cell frequencies.
  • Heterologous prime-boost vaccination or two MVA-MEU doses achieved complete bacterial clearance in prophylactic and therapeutic models.
  • The study supports advancing MEU-based vaccines into toxicology studies and clinical development for H. pylori prevention and treatment.
