- The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an inquiry into X Internet Unlimited Company (XIUC) regarding the processing of personal data from publicly-accessible posts on the 'X' platform by EU/EEA users.
- The inquiry focuses on the use of this data for training Grok Large Language Models (LLMs), developed by xAI, to assess compliance with GDPR provisions on lawfulness and transparency.
- Grok LLMs power a generative AI chatbot on the 'X' platform and have been trained on diverse data, including personal data from EU/EEA users' public posts.
- The inquiry aims to determine if the processing of this personal data for training Grok LLMs was lawful.
- The inquiry was initiated under Section 110 of the Data Protection Act 2018 by Commissioners Dr. Des Hogan and Dale Sunderland.
- XIUC, formerly Twitter International Unlimited Company (TIUC), rebranded as part of Twitter's transition to 'X' and is now the Data Controller for EU users of the platform.
