From 2016 to 2022, inpatient surgical volume fell by 49%, while outpatient volume rose by 17%.
Inpatient cases were more common among older patients, those with higher comorbidity scores, Medicaid enrollees, and those from lower income areas.
Inpatient surgeries had higher rates of ovarian, bowel, and multi-organ involvement, pelvic infection, and intraoperative complications.
Hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy was common in both settings but showed a significant shift from inpatient to ambulatory care.
Inpatient cases are associated with more complex medical and socioeconomic factors compared to outpatient surgeries.
