- The FROSTBITE-2 trial randomized 500 patients to compare transbronchial biopsy using a 1.1-mm cryoprobe versus 2.0-mm forceps.
- Cryobiopsy had a significantly higher diagnostic yield (88.6% vs 78.8%, P=0.003), especially in lung nodules/masses and lung transplant patients.
- For diffuse parenchymal lung disease, the diagnostic yield did not significantly differ between cryoprobe and forceps.
- Safety outcomes showed no pneumothoraces requiring chest tube in the cryoprobe group, while the forceps group had 4 cases (1.6%).
- No significant bleeding or respiratory failure events were reported in either group.
