- Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among adults globally, including in Argentina.
- Infections, especially respiratory ones, are consistently linked to increased risk of cardiovascular events, stroke, arrhythmias, and mortality.
- Pathophysiological mechanisms include systemic inflammation, immune activation, endothelial dysfunction, prothrombotic states, sympathetic stimulation, and increased myocardial oxygen demand; respiratory infections also cause hypoxemia and impaired gas exchange.
- Vaccines against Influenza, Pneumococcus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, COVID-19, and Herpes Zoster are safe for adults, including those with cardiovascular disease or risk factors, and reduce cardiovascular events by mitigating infection complications.
- Influenza vaccination is safe even during acute myocardial infarction when administered during hospitalization.
- Vaccination rates remain suboptimal among individuals with cardiovascular disease in Argentina and Latin America, highlighting a need for improved coverage through targeted recommendations.
