Chinese real-world self-driving test: 36 cars, 216 crashes, with Tesla on top

Chinese media outlet Dongchedi conducted a large-scale test of 36 car driver assist systems on a real highway, revealing significant shortcomings in most systems.
The tests included six complex and dangerous real-world driving scenarios, such as sudden lane changes, construction zones, and animal crossings.
Tesla's vehicles performed the best, with the Model 3 and Model X passing 5 out of 6 tests, despite using a vision-only system without LiDAR or radar.
Many ADAS systems showed inconsistent behavior, often swerving first before braking, which can create more dangerous situations on crowded highways.
Experts highlighted concerns about the reliance on machine learning in ADAS systems, as it makes it difficult to diagnose and correct errors due to the lack of transparent rulesets.
The tests concluded that current ADAS systems are not reliable enough for full hands-free or feet-free driving and should only be used as safety assists, with human drivers remaining primary.
