- Steatotic liver disease (SLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in the US, with subtypes including MASLD, MetALD, and ALD.
- A study of 1.5 million US veterans found ALD had the highest cirrhosis incidence (0.66 per 100 person-years), followed by MASLD (0.43) and MetALD (0.39).
- Mortality rates were also highest in ALD (0.32 per 100 person-years) compared to MASLD (0.24) and MetALD (0.19).
- Hispanics had a higher risk of cirrhosis compared to non-Hispanic Whites, while African Americans had a lower risk.
- Obesity and diabetes increased cirrhosis risk by 36% in MASLD and 22% in MetALD compared to patients without these conditions.
- The study highlights the need for integrated care addressing both metabolic comorbidities and harmful alcohol use to reduce cirrhosis risk.
