- GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) at weight-loss doses are linked to a lower risk of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with cirrhosis, based on a retrospective cohort study.
- The study found that GLP-1 RA users had significantly lower rates of HE (3.6% vs. 18.7%) and mortality (2.9% vs. 14.5%) compared to non-users, with a hazard ratio of 0.33 for reduced HE risk.
- A significant interaction was observed: GLP-1 RA use increased HE risk in patients with cirrhosis and liver cancer (HR 6.12) but decreased risk in those without liver cancer (HR 0.23).
