ICANN director and African internet pioneer Barrett dies – Domain Incite

Alan Barrett, an ICANN board member and South African internet pioneer, has passed away.
He died of recently-diagnosed cancer on May 28, with an online memorial planned and family requesting privacy.
Barrett was instrumental in establishing South Africa's first university internet connections and its first commercial ISP in the 1990s.
He served as CEO of AFRINIC from 2015 to 2019 and was a two-time appointee to the ICANN board, with a term set to expire in 2027.
