  • The study explores the relationship between obesity-related triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, cognitive status, and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and elderly adults.
  • A cohort of 5,822 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) was analyzed.
  • Cognitive status was measured using the Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status (TICS), and depressive symptoms were assessed with the CES-D-10 scale.
  • Obesity-related indicators (BMI, WC, WHtR) and TyG index were calculated from blood and physical examinations.
  • Results showed positive associations between TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR and cognitive status, but negative associations with depressive symptoms.
  • Non-linear relationships were found between TyG indices and both cognitive status and depressive symptoms.
  • Depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between TyG-BMI, TyG-WC and cognitive status, with mediation proportions of 6.8% and 5.8% respectively.
  • The study concludes that depressive symptoms play a significant role in the link between obesity-related TyG indices and cognitive status.
